Curriculum & Performance
Traditional at the core, and contemporary in approach
Our approach to teaching adults is, in many ways, very different from how we teach children, which is why we never club the two together. However, just like for our younger students, we still value building a strong foundation of both technique and theory and going deep into grasping each concept and composition, rather than superficially jumping to new pieces too frequently. Our classes go at a slow to moderate pace, with some sessions focusing on rigour and stamina building, while others focus on finer details and personalized feedback.
Dance
Our students are trained in the Lucknow gharana of Kathak, known for its emphasis on poetic grace, nuanced expression, and technical virtuosity. Our dance curriculum has been carefully designed to allow a student to deepen their understanding and appreciation of both the performative as well as the theoretical aspects of the art form. We believe in the power of building a strong and thorough foundation that would allow our dancers to go on to perform, choreograph, teach, and learn any other dance forms with grace and confidence.
Batches and Timings
We have 5 main adult batches, based less on the number of years of training and more on a student’s current level of practice with respect to our curriculum and style. Classes are conducted on Zoom, while those in Pune may attend sessions at our studio. All timings shown below are Indian Standard Time.
A fast-track workshop to get a feel of the dance form before applying for the one year foundation course.
Course Date: 9th August to 6th September
Last Date to Register and Pay: 3rd August 2025
Days and Timings: Wednesday evening 7:30PM to 8:45PM IST and Saturday morning 9:00AM to 10:15AM IST.
Facilitators: Deepthi Nandakumar and Swarali Teke
This is a minimum one year certified course, where students are introduced to the foundational Kathak techniques and choreographies through the Tridhara style, as well as theory, nutrition, dance and music appreciation. The prerequisite for this is our Short Foundation Course.
Days and Timings: Monday and Saturday mornings 7:30AM to 8:30AM IST
This is for those whose basic techniques are in place, and are ready to learn slightly more complex compositions in “Taal Teentaal” Madhya and Drut Laya, Vandana, Gat Nikas, Ladi, Notation, etc.
Days and Timings: Monday evening 7:15PM to 8:15PM IST OR Thursday morning 7:30AM to 8:30AM IST, and Sunday morning 7:30AM to 9:00AM IST
In this batch, we explore the finer aspects of Vilambit Laya, such as Thaat, Aamad, Uthaan and Paranaamad, and more complex pieces in Drut Laya such as Chakradaar Toda, Parmelu, Paran, Gat Nikas, Sargam Geet, etc. We also begin our journey with Abhinaya compositions.
Days and Timings: Thursday evening 7:15PM to 8:15PM IST or Friday morning 7:30AM to 8:30AM IST, and Sunday morning 7:30AM to 9:00AM IST
As the name suggests, we begin to delve into our second Taal, Jhaptaal, and continue to work on increasingly more complex Teentaal compositions that involve more intricate footwork and “layakaari”. We also explore new Abhinaya compositions such as Bhajan and Gat Bhaav.
Days and Timings: Wednesday morning 7:30AM to 8:45AM IST, and Sunday morning 8:30AM to 10:00AM IST
Students, at this stage, are quite advanced in both their physical and theoretical training, and are ready to move on to highly complex Teentaal technique, new Taals such as Rupak and Dhamaar, Abhinaya pieces such as Thumri, Dadra, Bhajan and Gat Bhaav.
Days and Timings: Tuesday morning 7:30AM to 8:45AM IST and Sunday morning 8:30AM IST to 10:00AM IST
Examinations
We conduct annual examinations at Tridhara, and our students receive an official certificate after each exam. We invite an external examiner to come and assess each student in their understanding of both the practical and theoretical aspects of Kathak. There are a total of 8 examinations for the general course, after which a student may choose to take up performing and/or teaching more seriously.
Please note that our examinations are privately run, as we are not affiliated with any external government organization. For our initial foundation-level course, the exam is given remotely. For subsequent levels, dancers in India are expected to come to Pune to give the exam, while international students may continue to give them online.
Performing Opportunities
More than examinations, it is performing on stage that truly refines and tests one’s skills. The process of working hard towards a stage performance for many months leading up to it arguably offers the greatest learning curve in our journeys as dancers. This is why we take it upon ourselves to create such platforms for our students to work hard, enjoy the sweat, and earn the applause and appreciation. Throughout the year, we host shows, both at our studio as well as at large auditoriums, where our students can showcase their dance. Promising students are selected for special solo performances. We also prepare our dancers for competitions, festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi, family and school functions, and even corporate shows.
